Chiefs Target Keen On Move
SA U23 midfielder Thabo Cele, who is currently a free agent, is understood to be keen on moving to Kaizer Chiefs.
The South African U23 midfielder had been training with a Polish first division team last week but a move seemingly didn’t materialise.
Cele has played in Portugal over the last five years after leaving the KZN academy in 2016. He was last on the books of Cova Piedade but his contract expired in June.
He impressed during the Olympics in Tokyo despite South Africa’s group stage exit and has awoken interest from clubs in South Africa, including Kaizer Chiefs.
“We have received so many calls from PSL teams, some were enquiring about his status after reading that he’s a free agent. Some of these calls came before the Olympics and others were just after the opening game at the Olympics,” said a source close to the player told iDiski Times recently.
Apart from Chiefs, clubs such as Maritzburg United, AmaZulu Cape Town City and TS Galaxy were understood to be looking into the midfielder.
Cele could help to rejuvenate the current Chiefs midfield, which includes ageing players such as Cole Alexander (32), Bernard Parker (35), Phathutshedzo Nange (29), Lebgang Manyama (30) but it remains to be seen whether Stuart Baxter wants to add him.
Initially, Cele wanted to stay in Europe but a return to South Africa seems now possible.
