Ronaldo Becomes World-Record Goalscorer
Cristiano Ronaldo broke the world record for most international goals by a male footballer against Ireland on Wednesday.
The 36-year-old netted against Ireland a late 1-1 equaliser to take his tally to 110 strikes for Portugal, breaking Ali Daei’s longstanding record.
Daei scored his tally for Iran between 1993 and 2006, with Ronaldo reaching the milestone in the 16th year of his national team career.
The Portuguese scored his first goal for Portugal at the 2004 UEFA European Championship and now netted his 110th around 17 years later.
It initially looked like Ronaldo had blown his chance to overtake Daei on the night after he missed a first-half penalty but he eventually found the back of the net to write his name in football’s history books once more.
Ronaldo even went one better on his record-night and scored a 96th minute winner for Portugal.
