Chippa Sign Laffor And Konqobe

Chippa United have announced the signings of Liberian international Anthony Laffor and former Amajita captain Ayabulela Konqobe.

Laffor was released by Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the season, while Konqobe is back at Chippa for a second stint. He last played in Scandinavia.

“I am thrilled to have the experience of both Anthony and Ayabulela to bolster our squad,” Dan Malesela said in a statement released by the club.

“We welcome them both to the Chilli Boys family, as we look at reinforcing in key positions, and also towards our ambitions for this season.”

The statement also confirmed they had joined until the end of the season, with an option to renew.

The 35-year-old Laffor spent 10 seasons at Sundowns, after joining from SuperSport United. He has won the league 7 times, 4 domestic cups, and was a member of the Sundowns squad that won the CAF Champions League in 2016.

“First of all I’d like to say a very big thank-you to the coach and the president himself Chippa, for giving me this opportunity,” Laffor told the club’s media department.

“It wasn’t difficult because after I spoke to the coach and the president, I knew that Chippa was where I was supposed to be. I had other clubs I was talking to, but I choose Chippa United because I feel Chippa is the best place for me to be.”

“I think I will fit in very well, the guys are friendly. I’ve spent two-three days with the team already.”

“I’m here to work for my place but I’m happy to be part of this team, the guys here are very friendly, they’re professional, they’re responsible, so I can see their is light at the (end of the) tunnel.”

Konqobe spent last season in Finland at Ekenas IF. He played 22 games, scoring 6 goals.

He came through the Ajax Cape Town youth system, but never featured for them as a senior. He had stints at SuperSport United, AmaZulu, Thanda Royal Zulu, Steenberg United and played for Chippa in the 2017/18 season.

Chippa are currently 15th on the DStv Premiership table, with just one win ten games.

Lehlohonolo Seema was replaced by Dan Malesela two games ago. He drew 2-2 against SuperSport United in his first game in charge, before losing 1-0 to Golden Arrows mid-week.

Chippa’s only win this season came on the 3rd of November, when they beat Maritzburg United 3-0.

They play TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium tomorrow.
