City Beat Maritzburg But Might Lose Points

Cape Town City have beaten Maritzburg United in a five-goal thriller but could still lose the points because the visitors played the game under protest.

Ambitious efforts from both sides in the first ten minutes couldn’t produce any goal in the game as both teams defenses looked solid.

But a good goal scoring chance popped up for the Citizens and Mduduzi Mdantsane gave his side an early lead in the 11th minute.

The visitors nearly found an equalizer in the 22nd minute through Daylon Claasen, but his shot went wide, before Mdantsane’s strike was saved by Marcel Engelhardt in the 26th minute.

The hosts continued to put pressure on Maritzburg and almost scored another through Mdantsane, but his try went off the post, before a Fagrie Lakay shot hit the side netting in the 31 minute.

The game went to half-time with the visitors trailing by a goal to nil.

The speedy and dangerous Lakay, who was causing problems with Mdantsane in the first half, doubled the lead five minutes into the second interval.

Maritzburg had the second half’s first notable chance in the 70th minute and Leletu Skelem made sure to convert to give his side their opening goal.

The Team of Choice kept their fighting spirit up as Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s effort was comfortably denied by Hugo Marques Just ten minutes to go.

City managed to scored a third via Tashreeq Morris who converted a Lakay cross in the 82nd minute but Maritzburg pulled another back through Bongokuhle Hlongwane just five minutes later.

City moved to 17 points on the log but will now have to see what the outcome of the DC process will be after the visitors played the game under protest because City’s players cards were stolen out of the team manager’s car, according to reports.

In the earlier fixture TS Galaxy beat Chippa United 3-1.
