Cape Town City have qualified for the MTN8 semi-finals after a 2-1 win over AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Thato Mokeke had a shot at goal in the 6th minute, but it flew straight at Veli Mothwa, but City were in lead two minutes later as Terrence Mashego dribbled through the Usuthu defence to score a great individual effort.
It was a hard fought battle in the middle, and while City were controlling the tempo, AmaZulu began to create a few attacking opportunities as the half wore on, but struggled to break down the visitor’s stubborn defence.
Siyethemba Sithebe tried a shot from outside the box in the 45th minute, but it went high and wide.
At half-time with few goal-scoring chances for either team, City held on to their 1-0 lead.
Mdu Mdantsane had a good chance in the 52nd minute, but after being setup well by Mashego, he shot wide. A minute later Lehlohonolo Majoro had a great chance on the other end, but his effort was also off target.
But Majoro did get his goal, as seconds later, he was set up by Keagan Buchanan, and with just the goalkeeper to beat, he made no mistake this time against his former team.
Buoyed by the goal AmaZulu looked to create more chances and Augustine Mulenga took a shot in the 57th minute, but new City goalkeeper Hugo Marques got down to make the save.
Once again though the game became a fight in the middle of the park, with few goalscoring opportunities.
Usuthu were awarded a dangerous free kick in the 84th minute, just outside the box, but Marques pulled off good save to deny Thapelo Xoki.
Just when it looked to be going to extra time, City grabbed the lead in the 89th minute through Mdantsane as he finished well from the right of goal.
