Cape Town City picked up a 2-0 win against Congo’s AS Otoho in the first leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round at Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was City who had the early chances as Darwin Gonzalez fired just over in the fifth minute, before forcing a save from Pavel Ndzila three minutes later.

City had the ball in the back of the net in 25th minute, but Khanyisa Mayo’s effort was ruled off-side. Marc Van Heerden shot over three minutes later, as City continued to push for the opener.

Another chance fell to Gonzalez in the 34th minute, but again he shot over. Mignon Etou-Mban had Otoho’s first real chance a minute later but shot wide, while Gonzalez’s free kick in the 38th minute was straight at Ndzila.

But despite City’s dominating the first half, it remained goalless at the break.

Thabo Nodada’s effort four minutes into the second half flew over the goal, but finally City were in front when Taahir Goedeman finished off a swift attack, 1-0 in the 52nd minute.

It was 2-0 five minutes later, as Marc Van Heerden’s looping header beat Ndzila.

City continued to press but failed to add to the scoreline, though Gonzalez went close in stoppage time but, Ndzila made the save. They will take a two goal advantage into next week’s second leg in Congo-Brazzaville.
