Ellis – The First Leg Is Vital

Ahead of today’s first leg of the first round African Women Cup of Nations qualifier against Mozambique, Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis says it is important to get off to a good start.

Unlike at the Cosafa Cup, Banyana will have their foreign contingent available, with the full squad having assembled in Mozambique today.

Ellis says that having played Mozambique at the Cosafa Cup, they feel suitably prepared, and they know it is important to get a good result in the first leg.

“Look, yes, we arrived safely and came in two batches, obviously, because of the FIFA date only starting today, you know, Thembi and Hilda, who played on Sunday for the respective clubs will only arrive (today, Tuesday),” Ellis told SAFA media.

“But the light training session went really well (yesterday, Monday), everybody’s really upbeat and looking forward to the match on Wednesday, we have another session (today, Tuesday), and then we’ll take it from there.

“But we have to make sure that we get off to a good start, the first leg is always very, very vital. And having played them before at the Cosafa Cup, that game is behind us, we know their strengths and weaknesses and I’m positive that they know a little bit more about us.

So we have one more day to to cross the t’s and dot the i’s, and then it’s all go ahead for Wednesday.

“So we’re really looking forward to putting some more training in (today, Tuesday). And then execute our plans,, and we’ll be ready for the game.”
