Grassy Park United are the 2023 Bayhill Premier Cup champions after stunning Cape Town Spurs 2-1 in the final at Athlone Stadium on Monday afternoon.
It was Grassy Park’s first-ever Bayhill title, and they were victorious after a hard-fought win over Spurs, who were hoping to defend the title they won last year.
But midway through the first half, Spurs were stunned when in the space of three minutes, Jody Claasen and Ryan Hamdulay scored goals.
While the young Urban Warriors fought hard, and pulled a goal back early in the second half through Nawaaz Salie, the Grassy Park youngsters put on an excellent defensive performance, and held out for the win.
Grassy Park eliminated SuperSport United in the semi-finals, and deserve full credit for their performances, especially in the knockout stages.
Spurs’ exciting winger Luke Baartman was named Player of the Tournament.
