Maritzburg Sack Tinkler

Maritzburg United has sacked Eric Tinkler, after their poor start to the 2020/2021 season, which has seen the Team of Choice lose their first five games in all competitions this season.

Maritzburg lost away to Black Leopards this past weekend, their fourth straight loss in the DSTV Premiership, and the club are currently sitting bottom of the table.

They had also lost to Kaizer Chiefs in the last eight of the MTN8.

“It has been an extremely disappointing start to the season and the results have not been forthcoming,” Maritzburg Chairman Farook Kadodia said in their statement.

“The Board therefore took the decision to terminate the contract of the coach. We would like to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Tinker had taken over at Maritzburg early in 2018, and had helped the club avoid relegation in his first season, as they survived the promotion-relegation playoffs in the 2018/19 season.

Last season the former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City coach had led Maritzburg to a 7th placed position finish in the league, while also taking the team to the Telkom Knockout final, where they lost to Mamelodi Sundowns.

He was one of the 3 nominated coaches for the 2019/2020 coach of the season, which was won by Pitso Mosimane.

He was in charge for 57 games at the club, winning 23, losing 21, with 13 draws.
