Middendorp Proud of Maritzburg Players
Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Middendorp has said he is very proud of his players, and everyone who contributed to the KZN team turning their season around.
While Maritzburg finished in 13th position in the DStv Premiership, at one point it looked like the Team of Choice were favourites to be relegated.
The club was bottom of the table at the halfway point, but a good run of form in the second half of the season saw the club pick up 21 points, and escape the drop
Middendorp says it is unbelievable considering the position they were in and while they did not win any trophies, there achievement should be applauded.
“I know where we started at the beginning of December,” Middendorp was quoted as saying by the club.
“Six games, zero points, Eight games, two out of 24 (points). Half of the season, 15 games, nine points. And we have now 30 points.
“It’s unbelievable what we have achieved. We have not qualified for Champions League, not being the champion, not winning a cup.
“But losing at home in the last game of the first half of the season, being rock bottom, but then going very clear through – securing the PSL status without playing in the relegation play-offs…
“Therefore very proud of what the guys achieved, everybody who contributed.”
