Mamelodi Sundowns Co-Head Coach Manqoba Mngqithi says that Puskas nominee Hlompho Kekana deserves to win the award, and that he’s been scoring that magnitude of goal throughout his career.
Kekana was nominated for his second Puskas award in four years, for the thunderbolt long distance goal he scored against Cape Town City last year.
He had previously been nominated for his goal against Cameroon for Bafana Bafana, when he scored from his own half in an Afcon qualifier.
Mngqithi has nothing but praise for the Sundown’s captain.
“He’s one boy that deserves everything that comes his way,” Mngqithi told the Sundowns media department.
“He’s a true professional, the guy works very hard, he’s very committed to the game. I don’t know any life that Hlompho Kekana lives, except football.”
Mngqithi says that those goals are a regular occurrence when it comes to Kekana, and he has been scoring beautiful and memorable goals throughout his career.
“If you were to look at the goals that Hlompho has scored, goals that are of the same magnitude as the goal that has taken him to this Puskas – I would really love Sundowns one day, in the Sky Is The Limit, or in whatever show, to just show the goals that Hlompho has scored over the years – the goals that he has scored at Sundowns, the goals that he scored when he was at (Bloemfontein) Celtic, the goals that he scored when he was at SuperSport (United). Because the guy has been scoring these goals, every season he’s got that goal.”
“And it never comes better than that. It always has to be a Hlompho Kekana goal, and it’s a show-stopper, and it’s one of those goals that win you matches.”
