Mngqithi – The MTN8 Result Is History Now
Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi says they are facing a very dangerous team in Cape Town City, but is a match that he is sure will entertain the fans.
It will be the second meeting between Sundowns and City this season, after the two teams met in the MTN8 final, where Sundowns triumphed in a penalty shoot-out after 120 minutes of gruelling football.
Mngqithi says that the MTN8 result is behind them now, and they need to be focussed against City, especially in Cape Town.
“Ja, we know we are facing a very, very good team,” Mngqithi told the club’s media department.
“Very organized, very dangerous, offensively, very dangerous on transition from defence to attack. But a team that also has some defensive frailties that we can try and capitalise on. But we are going into this game with a lot of respect and humility. The MTN8 result is is history now.
“So it’s very important to go to this match and respect it because they gave us a tough time in the in the MTN8. And based on that we know very well what to expect in this match. And there’ll be even more galvanised, intrinsically motivated to try and turn the results. So we know the challenges that are ahead of us.”
Mngqithi also confirmed that he has no real injury worries, and the FIFA break allowed some players to recover.
“Fortunately, maybe the break came at the right time for us,” he continued.
“We had some small knocks. Rivaldo, Mudau also got a knock. And now all those players are back in training, we almost have a full strength strength squad as it is now. Which puts us in a very, very difficult position as coaches in terms of team selection.
“But truth be told it’s a group that we believe has got the capacity to help us to get the results that we require in this match. It’s a very difficult one. Because you know, we are playing against a very good team. At Sundowns all we want is to win and to play good football, to play our type of football. But we must do that with a lot of respect of what the opponents are also capable of.
“And that is basically what we have to guard against, because we are playing against a very good team and they showed that even in the MTN8, but we’ve played against them in Cape Town, we know what they are capable of. They also know what we are capable of. It’s gonna be very nice game for the spectators that’s all I can tell you. It’s gonna be very interesting.”
