Pirates Get The Better Of Swallows
Orlando Pirates beat Swallows 1-0, as Tshegofatso Mabasa came off the bench to grab the winner in their DStv Premiership game at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Deon Hotto had a chance for Pirates from a free kick in the 7th minute, but his shot was always going over the goal.
While Swallows had a few dangerous attacks in the opening quarter of the game, they weren’t able to cause any danger to Siyabonga Mpontshane’s goal.
Sanele Tshabalala was called into action in the 18th minute as he made a good stop to deny a dangerous cross from Vincent Pule, while a minute later at the other end Mpontshane punched clear Monnapule Saleng’s setpiece attempt.
New Pirates signing Ntsako Makhubela had a chance in the 34th minute, but Tshabalala wasn’t tested and made a simple save, while Pule tried a long range effort in the 43rd minute but it went over the goal.
Lebohang Mokoena saw the same result with a shot for Swallows just before halftime, and at the break it remained goalless.
Pirates had a good chance at the start of the second half, but Abel Mabaso just couldn’t get to the end of a cross, and it was a missed opportunity.
Mpontshane saved easily from Ruzaigh Gamildien’s free kick in the 52 minute, who also shot over from a free kick attempt in the 67th minute.
Pirates thought they had a penalty with fifteen minutes to go, as Pule went down in the box, but the referee waved play on.
But they couldn’t be denied in the 78th minute when substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa headed in Pule’s cross to make it 1-0 to Pirates.
While Swallows pushed for a later equaliser, Pirates defended well and held on for the three points.
Meanwhile at the Mbombela Stadium, TS Galaxy drew 2-2 wth Golden Arrows. Michael Gumede gave Arrows the lead from the penalty spot, but Mxolisi Macuphu equalised for Galaxy just before half-time. Late in the second half Velemseni Ndwandwe restored the lead for Arrows, but Mthobisi Mngomezulu scored on debut for Galaxy to get the equaliser.
