Royal AM qualified for the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals after beating Swallows 1-0 at the Dobsonville Stadium on Friday evening.
It was a disappointing exit for Swallows and Dylan Kerr, who won the cup last season with Tshakhuma (now Marumo Gallants). The Birds missed a penalty before conceding the late goal, similarly to how they lost to the same opponent in the DStv Premiership last week.
Meanwhile AmaTuks are also through, while on Saturday Tshakhuma and SuperSport United joined Royal AM, Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants in the last eight.
Swallows 0-1 Royal AM
Junaid Sait went just wide in the fifteenth minute as Swallows applied some early pressure in a tightly-contested encounter.
Chances were rare, though Elias Pelembe had an opportunity for Royal AM, but went wide in the 33rd minute, while Jody February had to be alert to stop JB Ncobeni’s free kick in the 40th minute.
An early chance fell for Royal AM in the third minute of the second half, but Mfundo Thikazi’s shot was straight at February. Mwape Musonda’s effort in the 54th minute was always going off target.
Swallows were awarded a penalty two minutes later, after Monnapule Saleng’s cross struck Ncobeni’s arm. But Lebogang Mokoena’s penalty was too close to the keeper, and Patrick Nyame save easily.
Kamohelo Mahlatsi went close in the 76th minute, but Nyama did well to save the curling effort, and it remained goalless.
But Royal AM broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, as substitute Kabelo Mahlasela made it 1-0, after some neat interplay with Mxolisi Macuphu.
Thabo Mosadi was on target in the 85th minute, but the Swallows substitute couldn’t beat Nyame, while another sub Joseph Mhlongo was off target in stoppage time.
John Maduka’s team though managed the closing moments well, and booked their place in the last eight.
Venda Football Academy 3-3 (AET) AmaTuks – AmaTuks win 4-3 on penalties
Earlier in the day AmaTuks booked their quarter-final spot after beating Venda Football Academy 4-3 in a penalty shootout at the Thohoyandou Stadium. It had ended 3-3 after 120 minutes.
The visitors grabbed the lead in the 12th minute, with Bafana Bafana international Thabang Sibanyoni scoring the goal.
Their lead was short-lived however, with Johnny Ferreira’s men level four minutes later, Banele Gama scoring for VFA.
And the home team were in the lead in the 63rd minute when Tau Rankoko put them in front.
But ten minutes later the teams were level again, as AmaTuks scored their second via the penalty. Sanele Barns was fouled in the area, and Keagan Allan stepped up and converted from the spot.
It ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra-time was needed.
And it was Tuks who got back in front, as Wonderboy Makhubu made it 3-2 in the 96th minute.
But VFA were back in it with six minutes to go into extra-time, as Zimbabwean international Gerald Takwara scored from the penalty spot in the 114th minute.
At the end of 120 minutes it remained 3-3 and AmaTuks advanced after the penalty shootout decided the victor.
Sinenkani 0-3 Tshakhuma
GladAfrica Championship outfit Tshakhuma booked their Nedbank Cup quarter-final place as they beat ABC Motsepe side Sinenkani 3-0 at Mthatha Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Rendani Ndou gave the visitors the lead just before half-time, heading in three minutes before the break.
Rhulani Manzini made it 2-0 in the 70th minute, as he got to the end of Tlou Masegela’s cross.
Naeem Amoojee wrapped up the result in stoppage time as TTM progressed to the next round.
Platinum City Rovers 0-1 SuperSport United
SuperSport reached the quarter-finals after beating GladAfrica team Platinum City Rovers 1-0 at Olen Park on Saturday evening.
SuperSport took the lead in the opening minute of the game, with Selaelo Rasebotja scoring his first goal for the club.
The DStv Premiership outfit had numerous chances, including a penalty just before the half-time break, but Thabiso Mabitsela saved Thamsanqa Gabuza’s spot-kick. In the end though, the 1-0 score was enough to progress.
