SA Ref Attacked By Fans, SAFA Respond

March 23, 2022

A South African referee had to be escorted off the pitch after angry fans attacked him following an ABC Motsepe clash, with SAFA saying the club in question will be charged with assault.

The ugly scenes happened during and after the ABC Motsepe league match between Dondol Stars and MM Platinum.

The visitors picked up a 1-0 win thanks to a late goal, with home fans and club officials allegedly claiming the goal was offside – there protests went as far as attacking the referee as he had to be escorted of the pitch as shown in a video that went viral on social media.

“We’re very concerned with that kind of a situation. We want to take this opportunity with the strongest possible voice, because it does not belong to football, it does not belong to any sport in general,” SAFA Gauteng’s provincial executive officer Victor Raletjena told Thomas Mlambo on the Ultimate Sport Show.

“This kind of behaviour is the behaviour we don’t want to see in our football here.”

SAFA also confirmed that Dondol will be charged over two issues, fans being at the game as well as the attack on the match official.

“Dondol is going to be charged, we’re still studying the report from the match officials and then charges will go out,” Raletjena added.

“We’re looking at the health and safety protocols in relation to Covid-19 regulations and secondly at the assault of the match officials.

“By the look of the video you see that there are supporters there but there were not supposed to be supporters and supporters are not allowed as far as our fixtures are concerned.”

The victory saw MM Platinum move to the top of the ABC Motsepe league, Gauteng, stream B with 32 points, two more than second-placed Highlands Park.

However, had Dondol Stars won the match, they would have moved to the top of the log with 31 points.
