Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 Baroka
DStv Premiership log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns became the first team to win ten games in the league, when they beat Baroka 2-0 at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday.
While Sundowns dominated the first half, Baroka were no pushovers and Denis Onyango had to be alert a few times as the visitors threatened to upset the apple cart. Thami Masiya was inches away from giving them the lead just before halftime, but after lobbing Onyango, his shot went just wide.
There was a similar pattern in the second half, but Baroka would rue the missed opportunities in the first half as eventually Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Gaston Sirino broke free after being played in by Kermit Erasmus, and while Elvis Chipezeze got a hand to Sirino’s shot, it wasn’t enough to stop the ball from going in the goal.
Five minutes later it was 2-0. Peter Shalulile tapping in after Chipezeze saved Kermit Erasmus’ initial effort.
It could have been three in the 74rd minute, but Erasmus’ effort hit the upright and bounced clear.
Baroka came close to pulling one back in the 78th minute but with Onyango being in no man’s land, Ricardo Nascimento was on hand to clear Phelelani Shozi’s effort off the line.
Onyango made a save in stoppage time to deny Thuso Mogale, as Sundowns walked away the points.
