Usuthu Close To Snaring Former Pirates Midfielder

AmaZulu are close to signing former Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates midfielder Ntsako Makhubela, who was being assessed by the club.

Based on coach Pablo Franco Martin’s assessment, the player appeared to have impressed him, and he said the negotiations of the contract are being handled by the people at the top, saying it is not a one-man show when it comes to contract agreement.

Makhubela trained with Usuthu for a few days and was let go but he is now back with the Durban club, who reached the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 on Thursday when they beat Royal AM.

The 29-year-old is without a club after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Moroka Swallows in this January transfer window.

The former Real Kings midfielder had joined Swallows during the off-season but the dire finances at the Dube Birds saw him being one of many players told to pack his bags and leave their camp.

He was one of 22 players who, after the internal DC, was found guilty of refusing to play against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows respectively last December as they demanded their salaries to be paid before Christmas Day.

But the club’s chairman David Mogashoa disputed that, informing this website that the agreement with the players to be paid was at the end of every month.

“We have made it (the decision), but the coaches can’t make decisions (alone) but some people (at the top) are the ones who are negotiating, and they will make a final decision, and let’s see what happens,” said Martin after the Royal AM game.

“I cannot tell you anything right now, but he is training with us. We are also trying to pay attention to the market because we need to reinforce ourselves. We have a real opportunity that can give us a step forward to reach the next level, to be competitive because we can be the best team in these competitions.

“We couldn’t get the players we wanted in the end.”

If he joins Usuthu, it will be the third time Makhubela plays for a different KwaZulu-Natal club.

The 29-year-old spent two seasons with the Kings between 2017 and 2019, before joining Arrows ahead of the 2019/20 season.

As he turns heads with his performances at Abafana Bes’Thende, Pirates signed him ahead of the 2021/22 season. But he struggles to make a breakthrough in the side, returning to Arrows in the second half of last season on loan. He was still part of the Bucs that won the MTN8 against Usuthu in November last year in the first half.

Upon his return to Pirates at the end of last season, the Soweto giants parted ways with him, and he joined the Dube Birds, reuniting with his former coach Steve Komphela.
