Why Makgopa Is Not In Bafana Squad
Despite scoring a brace on his Bafana Bafana debut, Evidence Makgopa was not called up for the Bafana Bafana squad and assistant Helman Mkhalele explained why.
Makgopa’s goals against Uganda helped Bafana to a 3-2 win over Uganda in an international friendly.
Mkhalele, who will be leading the Bafana team at next month’s Cosafa Cup in Gqeberha, has explained that Makgopa has been included in David Notoane’s U23 squad for the Tokyo Olympics, and so will not be available for the Cosafa Cup.
Mkhalele congratulated the Baroka striker, who was is the reigning DStv Premiership Young player of the Season for seizing his opportunity, and says it is now a chance to look at a few other new names.
“(He is) with coach David,” Mkhalele said at a press conference.
“First and foremost, you know, I would like to congratulate Evidence, and that shows that if a player goes out there, and makes sure that he grabs it, why not, he can go and play, he can get selected as It has happened.
“Coach David of the U23s called him to join the squad that will be going to Japan for the Olympics.
“And for us, it’s another opportunity to look for other players, and see if they will make use of those opportunities.”
