Mzansi Players Shine Abroad

It was a goal-scoring weekend for two South African players plying their trade on foreign shores, as a few foreign-based players sent reminders to Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos ahead of next month’s friendlies.

Fagrie Lakay‘s brace for Pyramids against Zanaco in the CAF Confederation Cup was arguably the highlight, with the former Cape Town City star’s performances since moving to Egypt being impressive.

Lakay was part of Broos’s Bafana squads in last year’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers, though only saw limited time on the pitch.

But he wasn’t the only South African to score on the weekend. Tashreeq Matthews was the match winner for Varberg BoIS on Saturday, as he scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Sollentuna in the Swedish Cup. Luke Le Roux also featured in the match.

On Friday in Denmark, Gift Links came off the bench and got the assist for Aarhus’s winner in a 3-2 victory over Sonderjyske.

Thibang Phete and Yaya Sithole were both involved for Belenenses as they lost 2-0 to Gil Vicente in Portugal, while Thulani Serero‘s Al Jazira lost 2-0 to Al Nasr in the UAE.

Lars Veldwijk was in also action in Korea on Saturday, but his team Suwon suffered a 1-0 loss to Jeonbuk Motors.

Also on Friday, Lebo Phiri featured Rizespor in Turkey, but the team suffered a 2-0 loss to Basaksehir.

Bongani Zungu was in action for Armiens in France, playing the whole game as they drew 1-1 at Rodez.

Thabo Cele and his Polish side Radomiak Radom lost 3-1 to Warta Poznan on Sunday, while Kurt Abrahams featured for Deinze in Belgium as they drew 1-1 at Lommel.

Finally Lebo Mothiba continued his comeback, featuring in the final 30 minutes for Troyes as they lost 4-1 to Rennes on Sunday.
