Pitso, Tau & Serero Learn FIFA CWC Opponents

The draw for the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup took place today and Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly have found out who they will face at the tournament.

The Club World Cup is one of the targets for Mosimane, who guided Al Ahly to a third-place finish at the last edition earlier in the year.

Bayern Munich won the competition, while Al Ahly came back home with a bronze medal after beating Palmeiras on penalties.

The upcoming tournament was supposed to take place in Japan but has been moved to Qatar, with FIFA confirming it will now take place between 3 and 12 February 2022.

The tournament will be played over four rounds, with the first round only having one match between the hosts Thulani Serero’s Al Jazira and Auckland City. The winner will then move onto the second round where Al Hilal, Monterrey and Al Ahly enter the competition.

In the third round, UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea and Copa Libertadores champions Palmeiras will play the winners of the second round matches.

Mosimane’s Al Ahly were drawn against CF Monterrey, the winners of the 2021 Concacaf Champions League, in round two and would face the Copa Libertadores champions Palmeiras in a potential semi-final.

Meanwhile, Serero’s Al Jazira could set up a semi-final against UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea, if they can move passed Auckland City in round one and Al Hilal in round two.

Below are all qualified teams:

  • Al Hilal SFC (KSA), winners of the 2021 AFC Champions League
  • Al Ahly SC (EGY), winners of the CAF Champions League 2020-21
  • CF Monterrey (MEX), winners of the 2021 Concacaf Champions League
  • SE Palmeiras (BRA), winners CONMEBOL Libertadores
  • Auckland City FC (NZL), nominated by the OFC Executive Committee due to the cancellation of the OFC Champions League 2021
  • Chelsea FC (ENG), winners of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21
  • Al Jazira Club (UAE), winners of the UAE Pro League 2020-21
