AmaZulu Give Update On Former Chiefs Talent

AmaZulu coach Pablo Franco Martin has commented on the club’s assessment of former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Unathi ‘Omega’ Mdaka, and it appears he’s joining the club although initially for the DStv Diski Challenge side.

Mdaka, 20, started training with Usuthu on Sunday, as it was revealed by iDiski Times, and he was again with the first team on Wednesday after he saw his contract with Chiefs terminated over allegedly refusing to be a ball boy.

The match in question in which the players refused to be ball boys was the Carling Knockout Round of 16 against the AmaZulu at FNB Stadium last month, where they lost 1-0 via a goal of Taariq Fielies.

He was part of the side at training as reliable left-back Riaan Hanamub is yet to arrive back in camp from Namibia after playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Mdaka was released along with fellow defender Puso Dithejane, who was part Bafana Bafana B side that claimed the bronze medal in the COSAFA Cup in July, after they had their contract terminated, with the latter since joining TS Galaxy.

While there were reports that Chiefs, having developed Mdaka, are due compensation since he is not older than 21 as per FIFA rules, it appears Mdaka’s move to AmaZulu is done but he will initially feature in the reserve league.

“He is training with us,” said Martin.

“He came to train with the Diski team. As I told you, we are having some gaps there because we are missing some players.

“So, he is having an opportunity to join us. He is doing a job; we are checking on him. But his future is with the Diski and everything these guys are coming is improving when they are working with the first team.

“They are showing up, we know them, and same as Omega and some of the players and they are having chances to make debuts with the first team. They are already playing friendly games and we are happy with the performance.

“We also have to thank the people, who have been working at the grassroots for a long time, how the club is organised, the quality players they are bringing for the development, and the way we are looking at them.

“We are willing to promote them if they are showing that they have that quality.”

Usuthu were hard at work as they host Stellenbosch FC in the DStv Premiership at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (15:30).

Both sides are on a five-game unbeaten streak in all competitions, having reached the semi-final of the Carling Knockout Cup.
