Barns On Chiefs Rumours

Outgoing Richards Bay midfielder Sanele Barns has revealed that Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs never tabled an offer despite widespread rumours, and explained why he chose to join Stellenbosch FC.

Barns, 27, has been nominated for the Midfielder-of-the-Season award after he had a stellar campaign with the Natal Rich Boyz, helping them to survive relegation via the playoffs.

The former AmaTuks midfielder played his last game for Bay on Wednesday as he helped the side beat Baroka to a 4-0 rout.

The 27-year-old will join the Maroon Army in the upcoming season having already penned a pre-contract in January, as first reported by iDiski Times. Cape Town City were also in the race to sign, but were beaten to his services by their Western Cape rivals.

“Stellenbosch are playing good football at the moment, no one can deny that,” Barns told the media on why he opted for Steve Barker’s side.

“So, my decision to go there is because they are competing. I need to make sure that when I go there, I’m competing as they do. I think I’m highly motivated to go there.”

When he was asked about a move to Chiefs, he explained that those were just rumours and official offer was made by the Naturena-based outfit.

“To be honest there were rumours, but they [Chiefs] didn’t put anything on the table,” he explained.

He played 35 times for the KwaZulu-Natal-based side last season, finding the back of the net on six occasions and providing seven assists in the process.
