European Side Keeping An Eye On Ighodaro

Belgian giants Club Brugge are keeping a close eye on SuperSport United striker Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro, who’s on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ighodaro arrived in South Africa at a very young age, joining Sundowns from Abuja College in 2021 but so far he didn’t get the chance to make his debut for the Tshwane giants as he was loaned out several times.

However, he impressed during last year’s loan at Chippa United, where he scored 11 goals and collected two assists, finishing the 2022/23 season as the club’s top goalscorer.

The 22-year-old returned to Sundowns, but he was loaned out at the beginning of the current season to SuperSport United, where he played just over 1,400 minutes and had eight goals and two assists in all competitions.

Brugge recently appointed Dévy Rigaux as the new club’s Director of Football – a position Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was linked with. His task is to beef up the team for the upcoming season, having already signed Ardon Jashari from FC Luzern.

The 18-time Belgian champions are set to lose striker Igor Thiago, who is the club’s leading goalscorer with 16 goals but set to join to English Premier League side Brentford.

This publication has learnt that Blauw-Zwart has identified Ighodaro as one of the potential strikers they would like to bring into the club as the replacement for Thiago. Ighodaro’s current contract with Downs is set to expire in June 2025.

Brugge are chasing their 19th league title, as they sitting second in the Championship round with 36 points, two points behind Anderlecht with six matches to play. They also in the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final where they will face Italian side Fiorentina.
