After joining Mamelodi Sundowns from Swedish club IK Sirius, Tashreeq Matthews has explained why he left Europe to return to South Africa.
The signing of Matthews on Deadline Day took many by surprise. The 23-year-old had an excellent season in the Swedish Allsvenskan and reports were linking him with several European teams, but it was Masandawana, who won the race for his signature.
Matthews who hails from Hanover Park, the same Cape Town neighbourhood that Benni McCarthy comes from, says he has been impressed by the club’s facilities so far, and feels the club’s ambitions matches his.
“I have seen lots of pictures and social media posts about the club’s training base and I feel so happy to be here in person,” Matthews told Sundowns Magazine.
“It’s expected for a big club like this to have such incredible training resources. The level of professionalism and the ambition of Mamelodi Sundowns align with my aspirations as a player.
“The style of play at the club suits me. It’s a team that loves to play with the ball and retain possession. I have spoken to the coach and we share the same thought processes.
“I am eager to play my part in helping the team achieve its objectives for the season.”
