New SuperSport United left-back Lyle Lakay says he’s excited to reunite with Gavin Hunt after his move from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Lakay, 32, was on loan at Cape Town City last season after somewhat surprisingly fallen quickly down the pecking order after being DStv Premiership Defender of the Season in 2021/22.

He had returned to Chloorkop from his city loan but still wasn’t in the plans of head coach Rulani Mokwena, allowing him to feature and captain Bafana Bafana in the COSAFA Cup.

Today, Lakay has been unveiled as new signing bu Matsatsantsa, returning to his boyhood club for the first time since leaving to join Bloemfontein Celtic in 2012. He made his debut SuperSport under none other than Gavin Hunt.

“I’m very happy to be back where it all started with the same coach that gave me my professional debut,” Lakay told the club.

“I know the coaches mentally and what the team has achieved before with winning trophies, finishing third last season and winning the league when the coach was here.

“By saying that, I think we have a good mix of experience and youngsters to try and compete for silverware and I will do my best to try and help the team, but also to help and guide the youngsters.”

Lakay, who joined Sundowns from Cape Town City in 2018, made 162 appearances for Masandawana, scoring 13 goals and setting up 26 more.

He won four DStv Premiership titles, as well as one Nedbank Cup, one MTN8 and one Telkom Knockout Cup title.

Lakay already made his second SSU debut, coming off the bench in the club’s 1-0 win over Cape Town City on Friday.
