Barker Aims For Good Ending To 2021

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker would love nothing more than three points when they face TS Galaxy, but feels their opponents have turned a corner.

The two teams meet in the DStv Premiership this afternoon, and are currently at opposite ends on the table.

Stellenbosch are fifth and a win could see them jump into second spot, albeit temporarily depending on other results. Meanwhile Galaxy are 14th, and a victory for them could see them pull away from the bottom two sides.

Earlier this season Barker had said Stellies’ target to end the year was 30 points, and if they beat Galaxy, they would be just one short on 29.

Barker says it would be a great achievement to get there with a win, but they won’t take anything for granted at Mbombela Stadium

“I think it would be a massive achievement and target to get there as quickly as 18 games,” Barker told the club’s media department.

“So that’s what we set ourselves out to do. And important also, back to back victories in the PSL are really hard to come by. So and that would also be a massive sort of achievement for us.

“But ja, it’s a difficult trip, TS Galaxy have turned the corner a bit, they’re a competent team, a difficult team to beat at their home ground, but we’ve got one big effort left for this calendar year, and so we going there with a good mentality, to go and give a good account of ourselves, improve on some of our performances of late, and put on a performance that warrants three points.

Stellenbosch go into the game after beating Baroka on the weekend, where they didn’t necessarily play their best football but got three points.

“Ja, I think that happens in football,” Barker continued.

“We’ve had enough games where we’ve played well and haven’t got what we deserved from it.

“So just credit to the players, although we haven’t been performing at our best, we still hanging in games, the effort and commitment of the players during the matches is still of a high level.

“And if you continue to do that and stay in games, anything can happen.

“We just want to maintain that sort of commitment that we’ve had throughout the season thus far, and ja, it would be a magnificent result for us to get to 29 points before the year ends.”
