Johnson Explains Mashiane Return

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has urged the academy products to create selection headaches in the squad after Happy Mashiane’s return to the fold.

Mashiane, 25, got his first taste of DStv Premiership action as a late substitute in their 1-0 win over Moroka Swallows in the Soweto Derby on Sunday afternoon.

The likes of Sabelo Radebe, Bruce Bvuma, Samkelo Zwane and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo all seem to be back in contention for first-team football but Johnson has urged them to work harder to break into the starting eleven.

“Maybe it’s because I’m a young coach and they’re young players, so they play for young people,” Johnson joked when asked about Mashiane, Radebe and Ngcobo.

“I see a bright future for them, I just see that we’ve had quite a few injuries and they had to put up their hand, and for me?

“They have put up their hand at the right moment, they have come in now and like you said they are not that young anymore so they have to put up their hands a bit higher [work harder]. Not to be subservient to the guys that are injured.”

Johnson has overseen two wins and two defeats in his first four games since succeeding Molefi Ntseki on an interim basis.
