Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has applauded Moroka Swallows for appointing Steve Komphela as their head coach.
Komphela’s appointment was confirmed earlier this month with the club saying he will be assisted by Musa Nyatama, who helped the team survive last season, and Ditheko Mototo.
Khanye who was coached by Komphela in the national junior teams emphasises that he seems a perfect fit for the Dube Birds, who rebranded themselves back to Moroka Swallows on Tuesday.
Khanye believes, even though Komphela’s arrival means a step back for Nyatama, Swallows needed an experienced coach of his caliber.
“Steve has coached me at the U20 and U23 national teams. He’s more of a coordinator, he doesn’t restrict players, he allows his skilful players to play,” said Khanye on iDiskiTV.
“Steve’s profile has grown bigger since he has been at Sundowns. He had a good profile after coaching the junior national teams and even had an opportunity to coach Bafana Bafana when they didn’t have a coach.
“So he has grown a lot after going to Sundowns, where he has won league titles and cups. I don’t think now especially where he is, he would have agreed to the offer, if they were not going to pay him.
“Look at the environment where Steve comes from and where he is going, I’m sure they want to change things. Unfortunate for Musa Nyatama but truly speaking they need an experienced coach.
“For me it is a good move that there was space for Steve there with the experience he has gained at Sundowns”
