Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a second consecutive 0-0 draw as Polokwane City frustrated them at Loftus Versfeld in their final game of 2023 in the DStv Premiership on Saturday evening.
Sundowns came into the game after a 0-0 draw in the Western Cape to Cape Town City and the fixture against the unpredictable Rise and Shine proved frustrating.
Needing a win to sneak into the top eight, they managed to keep a clean sheet, albeit within what appeared a controversial incident in the second half.
Peter Shalulile appeared to have broken the deadlock but the strike was ruled out after the official made contact with the assistant and fourth official before reversing the decision.
It caused a bit of scuffle on the sidelines and the closest they came to finding a winner was through a rasping effort from Bathusi Aubaas in the 90th minute.
But Manuel Sapunga made sure his clean sheet as in tact as he made a fine save to secure a vital point for the visitors which left them in 9th place while Sundowns remain top, six points ahead of second-placed SuperSport – with three games in hand.
