Benni – A Great Opportunity For All Of Us
While Friday’s match against Nyasa Big Bullets will be AmaZulu’s first ever experience in the CAF Champions League, Benni McCarthy says they have a few players who know what the continental experience is like.
After finishing second in last season’s DStv Premiership race, Usuthu will make their CAFCL debut when they host their Malawian opponents in Durban on Friday.
McCarthy says while they are looking to create their own history, they are fortunate enough to have a lot of players who have experienced CAF football, and also many who are familiar with playing on the continent with their national teams.
“Yes, of course we’ve got a few, the (Orlando) Pirates boys, the boys that came from (Kaizer) Chiefs, they are accustomed to playing in the CAF Champions League, so they can give us some of their experiences, and just guide some of the players that were having the team,” McCarthy told the club’s media department.
“But I also think it’s a great opportunity for all of us to learn and take from this as a group, as a collective team, we want to make our own history, we want to have our own success.
“So going to Africa is not a novice, a few of us has different nationalities, play for the national teams, accustomed to African conditions.
“And some of us who has also played for Bafana, national team has traveled there, kind of knows what’s expected, and the African boys that we have in the team, they speak, they talk and they converse, and then they give each other indications on what Africa is really like, so we excited for that.
“And we think it’s a great opportunity, because we don’t know when next is AmaZulu is gonna be in the situation again, so we want to make the most of it, and try and go as far as we possibly can.”
