Chiefs welcomed fans back to the iconic arena for the first time since March 2020 but were greeted with cold rainy conditions in Soweto against a SuperSport side who sacked Kaitano Tembo as head coach in mid-week following their Nedbank Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of GladAfrcia Championship side TTM.
It was the first half of missed chances with Khama Billiat and Samir Nurkovic coming closest to opening the scoring, but the latter, who put the ball in the back of the net saw his effort rightfully ruled out for off-side.
The second half saw United look to contain Chiefs and play on the counter and they made the home side pay for their spurned opportunities as Thamsanqa Gabuza netted a 70th-minute winner with a real poachers effort, much to the delight of interim head coach Andre Arendse.
It proved to be the only goal of the game as Stuart Baxter received a frosty reception at full-time from the Amakhosi faithful who were left dismayed by their fourth home loss of the season as they now trail second-place Royal AM by five points – with two games in hand – pending the outcome of the High Court hearing of their postponed fixtures.
Meanwhile, SuperSport solified their case of securing a top-eight spot as they moved three points ahead of ninth-placed Golden Arrows who sacked coach Lehlohonolo Seema.
