Khanye Rates New Pirates Signing Gilberto

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes that Orlando Pirates mean business with the signing of former Petro de Luanda winger Gilberto.

The Buccaneers officially announced the acquisition of the 23-year-old Angolan international last Friday on a three-year deal, and he will form part of their pre-season tour in Spain. Though not confirmed by the club, the deal is believed to be worth around R10m.

Pirates finished the recently concluded 2023/24 DStv Premiership season in second position with 50 points and two domestic trophies in the form of the MTN8 & Nedbank Cup.

Khanye says Jose Riveiro’s side want to do just as good as Mamelodi Sundowns in the Champions League and are showing their intentions with this signing.

“You can see Pirates mean business,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“They want to be like [Mamelodi] Sundowns, they want to compete in the Champions League. They want to see themselves competing like Mamelodi Sundowns and in order for you to do that you need experienced players.

“He’s not a bad player, right-forward, left-forward and central as well. I saw him, he’s forceful and a very skilful player.

“I think he is a good signing for Pirates. I remember he missed a penalty when they were playing Sundowns in the AFL but anyone can miss a penalty and he had a good game.

“I do think Pirates mean business and want to be just as competitive as Sundowns. Pirates have good individual players for the DStv Premiership, you saw what they did this season compared to other teams. I mean winning two trophies is not easy.

“But this guy’s experience, his character, you can see when he plays he gives his all and his competitive mind-set. He wouldn’t have been in that squad if he wasn’t a very good player.”
