Orlando Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge coach Joseph Makhanya is unsure whether he’ll be leading the club’s reserve side next season, though he hopes to continue in the role.
Makhanya led Pirates to a third-place finish with 58 points in the past campaign, and played a role in promoting teenage sensation Relebohile Mofokeng to the first team.
Speaking to the media after acquiring his CAF B Licence, ‘Duku Duku’ said the only way to produce more Mofokeng’s is to give youngsters the platform to play.
“I’m still to find out,” Makhanya said.
“But from where I’m standing, I’d like to believe that I’ll still continue as the DDC coach which is something that I’m looking forward to up until we produce more Rele’s because, at the end of the day the platform that I have been given is to make sure that there are more Rele’s coming.
“So, I’m hoping that maybe there are still players that are hungry and my job is not to give them talent but to make sure that they are at least better polished, maybe half cooked for the first team because the only time that they will get ready is when they are given the platform.
“So I’d like to believe that if they are to look at Rele or they are to look at maybe some of the players that have graduated from the DDC it means there is hunger. And if they can maintain the hunger and their talent is nurtured properly then we can get more Reles which is something that we strive for.”
The 19-year-old Mofokeng had a dream debut season for the senior squad winning the Nedbank Cup title as well as being crowned the PSL Young Player of the Season.
