Mendieta Bids Farewell As Next Move Beckons

Argentinian attacking midfielder Junior Mendieta has sent a farewell message to Stellenbosch FC ahead of his imminent move to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The DStv Premiership champions are understood to have won the race for the winger, with SuperSport United also making a serious attempt to sign him, according to sources.

Other clubs who were rumoured to be interested in the Corrientes-born player were Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs respectively.

With Sundowns expected to announce his arrival shortly, Mendieta shared a farewell message with his Stellenbosch family.

“I am respectfully addressing you to thank you for the opportunity and the love that you have given me all these years,” he stated.

“I think I have done my job very well and I have always given my best and that leaves me at ease.

“I will always carry Stellenbosch in my heart and be grateful for all the love and affection they gave me and my family. Greetings and thank you.”

The 29-year-old, who turns 30 earlier this month, can look back at an impressive 2022/23 season, helping his club to finish sixth with 40 points, scoring nine league goals in 26 DStv Premiership starts.

He was part of Steve Barker’s side that ended Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena’s 24-match unbeaten streak in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals in April.

Overall, Mendieta featured in 31 matches in all competitions, scoring 10 goals along with nine assists – making him the second-most productive player behind Monnapule Saleng.
