Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi admits they will make signing a left-footed centre back a priority despite the impressive form of Divine Lunga in recent weeks.

The Zimbabwe international defender has featured in five of their last six games in all competitions after initially only featuring in six games out of a possible 42 in the prior months during his debut season at the club.

However, he’s slotted seamlessly in the defence with several assured displays amid injury and illness within the Masandawana first-team squad of late which has earned praise from the technical team and supporters alike.

But that has not changed the mind of Masandawana as Mngqithi confirmed they could sign one or two players in the position during the upcoming transfer window as they are well-stocked on the right side of defence.

“Divine Lunga has done exceptionally well which is expected of him, when we brought him here, we brought him here with the mentality of playing him as a full-back or a left centre-back and he’s come in handy and done exceptionally well in the matches he’s played,” he said at Chloorkop on Wednesday afternoon.

“But that still does not change the fact that we are still looking for another left-footed centre-back because that’s an area where we lost Ricardo Nascimento. On the right, we’re a little bit safe with Brian [Onyango] Rush[ine De Reuck] and Grant [Kekana].

“So on the left, we only have Mosa and half of Divine in that space, so it would be nice to get two left-footed centre-backs but when we’re looking for the best quality we can get, one would be enough.”

Lunga will likely feature again for Sundowns who are still struggling with a flu outbreak when they compete for the Nedbank Cup title and a domestic treble against Marumo Gallants at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday evening.
