Orlando Pirates are closing in on the signing of Chippa United midfielder Azola Matrose after an impressive debut season in the DStv Premiership.
The teenager has been one of the breakout talents of the 2021/22 season with Chippa since being signed amongst 13 other players in the off-season under then-head coach Gavin Hunt.
From Walmer Township, Matrose was one of the more unknown figures within the unveilings alongside the likes of Phakamani Mahlambi and Sammy Seabi but his influence under Kurt Lentjies has been telling.
Comfortable on the wing or in an advanced midfield position, he’s received 13 appearances, four of which were starts and has shown the creative spark that simply cannot be taught.
While he’s only scored once and registered one assist, Pirates have seen enough of his potential to make a move and iDIski Times understands they have already agreed a deal in principle with the Chilli Boys while the player has also agreed personal terms.
Stellenbosch FC enquired about his availability but were put off by the club’s asking price, with Chippa having him on a five-year deal to ensure they secure a major return on investment on the rookie talent.
It’s unclear whether the Buccaneers will now allow Matrose to continue his development in Gqeberha, as they did with the signing of Evidence Makgopa from Baroka this past season, or if he will make an immediate switch to Mayfair ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
