Banyana Lose Bronze Battle
Banyana Banyana ended their Cosafa Cup campaign on Saturday as they lost 4-3 to Zambia in a penalty shootout in the 3rd/4th playoff on Saturday at the Wolfson Stadium.
It was a tight battle between two sides who many had expected to contest the final, as it ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
The Zambians took the lead in the 20th minute, when Ochumba Lubandji headed in from a corner.
At halftime it remained 1-0, but the lead could have been by more as Banyana’s defence once again struggled to clear their lines at times.
The battle continued in the second half, and as the match wore on Banyana began to create a few chances, substitute Gabriela Salgado going close in the 68th minute, but denied by a good save by Catherine Musonda. Musonda denied a long range effort from Janine van Wyk moments later.
And Banyana were level in the 75th minute, as the tournament’s leading goalscorer Sibulele Holweni headed in from close range after Musonda missed a ball into the box.
While both teams pushed for a late winner, it wasn’t to be and the match ended level at 1-1 after ninety minutes and a penalty shootout decided the winner.
