Barker Happy With The Commitment

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker was relieved and happy to win their first match of the season, after a 1-0 win over ten man TS Galaxy on Wednesday.

Ashley Du Preez’s goal clinched the victory for the home team in their DStv Premiership clash at the DC Stadium.

Barker was pleased with his team’s commitment and and how they controlled the match.

“Yes, obviously really pleased with getting the three points, our first game of the season at home,” Barker told the club’s media department.

“You know as a club we haven’t won a football match for a while now, so I think it’s just really something that we needed to do.

“I think we put in a big effort in terms of our commitment on the field, although we did play a majority of the game against 10 men, it didn’t make it easier.

“But I do believe we controlled the majority of the match, we just had the chance to get the second goal to just really kill off the game and bury it which we didn’t and that’s an area that we just have to be more ruthless and take those goals that are presented to us, because by not scoring that second goal the last 10, 15 minutes it gave them hope, they started pushing numbers forward and we had to see it out.

“But just generally overall pleased with the performance. tactically I thought we were really good this evening. But mostly proud of the commitment of the players to really work hard for each other.”
