Barker – If You Don’t Take Your Chances It Will Come Back And Bite You
Stellenbosch Head Coach Steve Barker cut a frustrated figure after his team lost 1-0 to Maritzburg United on Tuesday, with a late controversial penalty given in the DStv Premiership encounter.
Junior Mendieta was adjudged to have handballed in the box in stoppage time, but replays suggest it was a harsh call.
Barker was left disappointed, as he felt his team had dominated the game, but says they also weren’t able to use that advantage.
“Ja, unfortunately, it’s been a bit of a story of late for us, dominating games, first half I thought there was only one team really on the pitch,” Barker said after the loss.
“But ja, there’s a old age saying in football, if you don’t take your chances it will come back and bite you. We didn’t take our chances, we didn’t convert when we were on top.”
“So first half, I thought we were really a tremendous, played with a lot of energy, stretch them, put them on the blackfoot.”
“Second half, they changed their formation went two blocks of four, with two, so it sort of negated the game for the first 25 minutes, second half I thought it was a bit of a stalemate game, we weren’t able to create as much.”
“And then as the game went on, I felt we were getting back on top. And in the last 15, we created again chances to get a winning goal. And we didn’t so, and then that’s what happened.”
“Dunno if it was a penalty. I’m told that it probably wasn’t. But not much I can do about that right now. Just gotta believe in what we’re doing, and keep working.”
“Obviously, our biggest challenge is just in the final third, just to be a bit calmer, a bit more composed, a bit more sort of quality, to take our chances, and then we’ll win a lot more football games.”
