Stuart Baxter has confirmed that Bernard Parker will be Kaizer Chiefs’ vice-captain for the coming season.
The Englishman opted to enter their DStv Premiership opener against TS Galaxy without Itumeleng Khune, leaving also a void in the captaincy department.
Baxter had already announced that Khune will stay his captain but didn’t want to reveal who will be next in the pecking order, insisting that he wants all his players to show leadership.
However, Parker was given the armband on the day and the Amakhosi coach confirmed after the match that the 35-year-old will be Khune’s vice for the 2021/22 campaign.
“We just think at the moment, Bernard being the senior player, he is the most suitable for that,” Baxter said when asked by iDiski Times about his captaincy order.
“If we move down the line and someone really puts his hand up, then we will rethink.
“But Itu is the captain when he plays and at the moment Bernard is the vice-captain.”
Chiefs will return to action on Wednesday and it will be interesting to see whether Khune will return to Baxter’s starting XI or whether he will opt for Bruce Bvuma in goal again.
