Baxter On Whether Khune Performances Will Give Him Headaches

Stuart Baxter has discussed whether Itumeleng Khune’s performances in the DStv Compact Cup will give him selection headaches at Kaizer Chiefs.

Khune was voted into the DStv Compact Cup squad of Warriors FC and helped the team, coached by Dylan Kerr, to lift the trophy.

His fine performances haven’t gone unnoticed by many fans, who have since called upon his club coach to perhaps give him another chance in the Amakhosi line-up.

Baxter says, he’s definitely taken note of the 34-year-old’s performances and admitted that he has put more pressure on his Chiefs teammates to keep up their level.

“Well, he doesn’t give me anything to think about more than I was thinking about it before,” the Englishman said.

“I think what it is, it’s a compliment to Itu, it’s a compliment to the staff, Lee [Baxter] has been doing a great job with Itu.

“And what he does, he exerts pressure on the other keepers because he’s throwing out a reminder that ‘don’t discount me’.

“What I would say is that it doesn’t surprise me with Itu, that it’s what we’re looking for, it’s that sort of regular performance in training, in games and I’m sure that if Itu does that, then I’m sure he’s going to put a lot of pressure on the guys in front of him.

“Now, I do think at this stage of his career, with the competition he’s got, he’s got to be like that. He’s got to be tamed – don’t forget me, all the time.

“And a huge compliment to Itu that he’s still got that in him. And I think that’s a credit to him and the coaching staff.”

Khune only made one appearance for Chiefs this season, with Daniel Akpeyi being the trusted man by Baxter in large parts of the first half of the campaign.
