Broos Cuts Bafana Player Because He Looks ‘Overweight’
Hugo Broos has revealed that he was a bit surprised over the condition of Golden Arrows goalkeeper Sifiso Mlungwana.
The Belgian coach has cut eight names from his preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
South Africa first face Zimbabwe away from home before hosting Ghana at the FNB Stadium next month.
Among the players that were cut by Broos was Golden Arrows goalkeeper Mlungwana and the coach explained it was due to his physical condition.
“I saw a few games in South Africa and I’ve been surprised by players that were a little bit heavy,” he said on SABC Sport.
“I don’t understand (because) they are professional players. That is one of the reasons why he is not there.
“Ok, he has played good games, I have to say that. I saw the games from him, he played good games.
“But the first time I saw him I was a little bit surprised, (he is) a little bit overweigh I think.”
Mlungawana was one of eight players who were cut from the squad, with the others being:
Mosa Lebusa (Sundowns, injured), Innocent Maela (Orlando Pirates), Njabulo Ngcobo (Kaizer Chiefs), Kobamelo Kodisang (Braga B), Sphelele Mkhulise (Sundowns), Sphephelo Sithole (Belenenses, COVID) and Siyethemba Sithebe (AmaZulu).
