Former Bafana Bafana striker Pollen Ndlanya, who played for both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, says whoever wins Sunday’s Soweto Derby will leave with a boost to their confidence for the rest of the DStv Premiership campaign.
Pirates will be looking for a win to put pressure on league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while victory for Chiefs could be the catalyst to push for a top eight spot.
Ndlanya says that the derby is a special game, and while victory can boost confidence, a loss can also be incredibly demoralising.
Ndlanya was speaking to Lethabo Kganyago in the Edition 11 of iDiski Times, which was released this week.
“You know, when you win in a derby, it boosts the confidence to the players,” Ndlanya told iDiski Times.
“Because I must say that a win, the confidence is just boom! You know, you need to win, you can imagine if you lose every time how you demoralise the spirit of the team.”
“But winning more especially in a derby is something else. As you’re saying that it can change everything going forward, with a lot of confidence. Yeah, I think I think it will count in both teams.”
“Ja, you know, in this game, the league, it’s a marathon. It’s a marathon. It’s not like a cup where you just play one game and you win.”It’s a marathon. It’s a mind game. You know, Pirates, if they keep on winning their games, if they keep on winning their games, they’ll put more pressure on Sundowns.”
