Truter – Why Swallows Didn’t Sign Lebese
Swallows FC coach Brandon Truter has explained why his side opted against former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns winger George Lebese.
Lebese has been in South Africa because he couldn’t return to his American club, Colorado Springs Switchbacks, due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.
He was close to joining Marumo Gallants (then Tshakuma) in 2020/21 but there were issues with his international clearance.
Lebese was training with Swallows earlier this window but coach Truter explained that his qualities didn’t fit in with the Dube Birds’ style and philosophy.
“George Lebese, what a player, top quality,” he said during a press conference.
“But unfortunately, I wouldn’t say we didn’t reach agreement as towards means in the media right, but we didn’t get to the negotiation part and I have to be honest in that regard.
“George is a top player, there’s no doubt about it. His quality, his achievements, the stats, the facts are for all the to see.
“But I mentioned earlier also we had to get the right players in the right position to also find the right characteristics as well.
“Unfortunately for George, his style of play, and what it can can bring to the table didn’t really fit this with the Swallows way. And we need to look at the club first before we consider any individual.
“Any other day I would take George in my team as well. But you can be the best player but if it affects the the whole make-up of the squad and the make-up of the team and how we want to play then I rather side with the team then the individual.
“George was really, really good when he was here. We can see the qualities and what it can, but we’ve a certain philosophy and the playing style at Swallows that we want to entertain.
“And there’s certain aspects in the team which are non negotiable and unfortunately George lost out on that regard.
“I wish him nothing but the best going forward, what nice bloke is well, great personality and Doctor footballer, but unfortunately at Swallows FC, it wasn’t the time for George.”
Swallows will face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 quarter-final on Saturday.
