Maritzburg Face Battle To Retain Talented Midfielder

Maritzburg United are facing the challenge of retaining highly-rated midfielder Genino Palace, who has attracted interest from the DStv Premiership.

Palace, 24, joined United in January 2022 after spending five years in Portugal with Sacavenense U19, Braga U23 and Académica U23 squads.

The Stars of Africa Academy product has clearly revelled in his professional breakthrough in the Premier Soccer League and became a regular feature in the deep-lying playmaker role.

He missed only three games all season for the Team of Choice, but their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship has thrown his long-term future in doubt.

While the club are keen on holding onto the player, several enquiries have been made on his availability – while Stellenbosch have are seriously considering making an official move in the upcoming transfer window, according to sources close to the Cape Winelands club.

However, with a mass exodus of players and all the non-playing staff being retrenched, it remains to be seen whether the club will be willing to allow him to leave as they look to rebuild the club for a challenge of promotion to the top-flight next season.

Palace has made 42 appearances for the KZN-based outfit since his arrival, scoring once.
