Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane admits qualifying out of Group A won’t be a foregone conclusion for the African champions.
After winning two consecutive Champions League titles since joining the Egyptian giants, Mosimane and his troops were drawn with his former club Sundowns and Sudanese giants Al Hilal, and Al Merrikh.
Having conducted the draw as an honourary guest, the former Bafana Bafana boss was at hand to comment immediately which he denied they are favourites to advance as group winners.
“The local teams will cancel each other as local derbies, what’s interesting is that the two top teams both went to Sudan last season and didn’t win there,” he said.
“It won’t be an easy group, we have Sundowns, [who] obviously want to beat us, but we’ve beaten them for the last two times so it’s okay.”
Masandawana and Ahly will face each other in back to back games for matchday three and four in late February and early March 2022.
