Baxter On Chiefs Goalkeepers
Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has addressed the club’s goalkeeper situation after seemingly rotating the Nr.1 spot.
Brandon Petersen, who has joined Amakhosi this year, was between the poles in their shock 4-1 defeat to Royal AM last week and came on as a sub in the Carling Black Label cup.
Meanwhile, Bruce Bvuma started in the first three games in the DStv Premiership this season, with Itumeleng Khune playing in the MTN8 quarter-final vs Sundowns.
Daniel Akpeyi was selected for Sunday’s starting XI against Marumo Gallants and Baxter explained that certain situations call for the more experienced players.
“We’ve got four goalkeepers that are potentially number ones. You can look at the long term of the club, the assets are Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen,” Baxter told Kaizer Chiefs website.
“Itumeleng Khune and Daniel Akpeyi give us that experience and we are hoping they will help and assist in the development of our two younger goalkeepers.
“We have to take every opportunity we can, if all things are equal, to give our younger goalkeepers the experience that will make them senior goalkeepers.
“That’s where we are, at some point you say well let’s allow them to step back a little bit and give the more experienced guys the shirt in this situation. That’s the rationale behind our thinking,”
Chiefs play Marumo Gallants later today at Peter Mokaba Stadium at 17:00.
