Chiefs Pick Up First Win In CAFCL Group Stages

Kaizer Chiefs picked up their first win in the group stages when they beat Petro de Luanda 2-0 in their CAF Champions League Group C game at the FNB Stadium.

Chiefs’ Coach Gavin Hunt will be delighted with the result after a draw and a loss in their first two games in Chief’s maiden group stages appearance.

Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Petro de Luanda

It was a first half where Chiefs dominated possession, however they will be disappointed by how few attempts at goal they had considering the amount of ball they saw.

But Chiefs were eventually in the lead when Erick Mathoho rose highest to head in Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s corner in the 30th minute.

Chiefs had further chances in the opening 45 to extend their lead ,but it was Mathoho’s goal that separated the teams at the break.

Daniel Cardoso came close in the 63rd minute, but his header struck the upright, and Petro were able to clear.

A good save by goalkeeper Dominique Antonio denied Happy Mashiane a few minutes later, as Chiefs pressed for further goals.

But Mashiane was not to be denied in the 79th minute as he dribbled through the Petro defence before unleashing an effort that beat Antonio to make it 2-0.

It was almost three in the 89th minute but Antonio was on hand to deny the Amakhosi after a great build-up.

The win lifts Chiefs to four points in the group.

Wydad, who are on 6 points, and Horoya who are also on 4 points, play later on Saturday evening. Petro are yet to win a game.
