Steve Komphela has defended Itumeleng Khune after the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper was seen close to Mamelodi Sundowns’ celebrations on Sunday.
The Masandawana first-team coach saw his side beat Amakhosi on penalties in the MTN8 quarter-final on Sunday following a penalty shootout.
Khune was seen close to Downs’ celebrations around their goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene, who had saved four sport kicks and was huddled by his teammates after the final whistle.
The Amakhosi goalkeeper seemingly wanted to congratulate his fellow colleague on his outstanding display in the shootout but received some backlash from fans.
Komphela came out in Khune’s defence, praising him for his sportsmanship.
“When humanity governs and sportsmanship reigns no logic prevails, only emotions,” he said on social media.
“I hope you understand. Well done Itu. We meet again, this time near-post.”
Khune himself responded to Komphela’s post, thanking him for his kind words.
“Goleboga Nna Mokwetlisi. All the best for the rest of the season. We’ll meet again.”
Downs and Komphela will now face Golden Arrows in the MTN8 semi-final, while Chiefs and Khune will focus on their season opener against TS Galaxy.
