Mkhalele Explains Call-Up Of Chiefs Stars
Helman Mkhalele has explained why three Kaizer Chiefs players were called up to the Bafana Bafana squad despite the Cosafa Cup clashing with the CAF Champions League final.
Chiefs currently lead 1-0 in the semi-finals after the first leg in Morocco against Wydad Casablanca. They host Wydad in the second leg this weekend.
If Amakhosi would make the final on 17 July, the game will clash with the Cosafa Cup, which is set to take place between 6 and 18 July.
Mkhalele, though, has confirmed that Bafana have a standby list in place. If Chiefs would reach the CAFCL final, the three players selected, namely: Bruce Bvuma, Siyabonga Ngezana and Happy Mashiane, will be replaced.
“We have more players on standby just in case Chiefs proceed to the final, so we have players in place to fill in those gaps,” Mkhalele said at the press conference.
“Not that we don’t wish Chiefs to go to the final, we want them in the final but now we would find ourselves in a situation whereby we have omitted Chiefs players.
“We have selected the players based on our tactical plan that we want to apply, that is the main reason why we select players.
“So we felt that for our initial plan, we need these players, that’s why we included them but we have players that are there if Chiefs proceed to the final.”
